OOEY GOOEY WEEK!
This post was inspired by my colleague, Machaela, who wrote an inspiring post about Lisa Murphy or the Ooey Gooey Lady on her blog (http://machaelasmasters.blogspot.com/). Check it out!By coincidence, our local Co-Op preschool, where my daughter attends and I as a parent teacher, had their own "Ooey Gooey Week" this week. This picture is of an unusually tidy activity, but is still in the same spirit of "meeting the kids where they are at," as Lisa Murphy and many other childcare professionals I have known often say.
Anyway, during Ooey Gooey week, the kids get to break most all of rules of cleanliness and listening and play very hard with messy materials galore. The school and the kids are covered in paste, paint, food coloring, toilet paper... You name it! The connection the kids get from this transforms them. They gain confidence and a love of school that no one has seen before. I love working Ooey Gooey Week!
This one's for you, Machaela!
One of my coworkers was just telling me about the Ooey Gooey LAdy... I had never heard of her or her work before! I went to the page and I fell in love. I will definitely be looking into this!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed it as much as I do, Alacia! Loads of fun!
ReplyDeleteLauren!!! This picture gave me the chills and put a huge smile on my face! It also made me run through my house looking for some sort of net that I could bring to school tomorrow! What an amazing activity and experience for your daughter! I love it when preschool classrooms just GO FOR IT! I would say that it is one of my professional goals to have teachers and classrooms that feel comfortable having an "Ooey Gooey" moment at least once a week!
